The Paradox of Our Age

dalai-lama-1207695_640

I love this quote from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama which seems to say so much about how we live today:

“We have bigger houses but smaller families;

more conveniences, but less time. Continue reading “The Paradox of Our Age”

How Much ‘Stuff’ is Enough? The Naked Truth!

The UK Channel 4 programme ‘Life Stripped Bare’ which was broadcast in July created some debate as to whether the nakedness of the participants was necessary or gratuitous.

movers-24403_640The premise was “… What happens when three young households have all their belongings taken away?…”. It’s still on All 4 at the moment, and various clips from the programme can also be found on YouTube (see links below). Continue reading “How Much ‘Stuff’ is Enough? The Naked Truth!”

Five Ways to Wellbeing

‘Five ways to wellbeing’ was developed by NEF and is currently being promoted by Mind, the UK mental health charity. Simply put, it’s a framework to help us look after our mental and emotional health:

  • Connect – with other people, a fundamental human need
  • Be active – physical activity helps our mental and emotional state, as well as our bodies
  • Take notice – of what’s going on around you, now
  • Keep learning – learning new things helps keep us engaged and active
  • Give – doing something to help someone else makes us feel good

Grayson Perry on Loose Women

If my recent post on Men and Masculinity caught your eye, now that the Grayson Perry documentaries don’t seem to be available to view in full, his interview on ITV’s Loose Women will give you a good flavour: Continue reading “Grayson Perry on Loose Women”

Mindapples: five-a-day for our minds

apple-336015_640I was talking to someone about resilience recently and was reminded of a CIPD branch event I went to a couple of years ago. The speaker was Andy Gibson, ‘Head Gardener’ at an organisation called ‘Mindapples’. Continue reading “Mindapples: five-a-day for our minds”

Why We Work – and What Motivates Us?

office-594132_640Two TED talks I’ve watched lately have some interesting views on why we work and what motivates us and to what extent our approach to this is based on outdated (and even disproven) ideas. Continue reading “Why We Work – and What Motivates Us?”

Being Kind versus Being Right

I was reminded recently of something someone said to me a few years ago.

She was in her early forties and said that she’d got to the stage in her life when it was more important (to her) to be kind than to be right. Continue reading “Being Kind versus Being Right”

What Really Matters at the End of Life

As you may know, I work at our local hospice with people who are been bereaved, and with people who are anticipating bereavement. Because of this, as well as because of my own personal experiences of death of friends and family, I was interested to hear what B J Miller has to say in this TED talk. Continue reading “What Really Matters at the End of Life”

War on Waste

Organic Rice Field With Dew Drops

I loved these two programmes on the BBC – presented by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall but it was shocking to see the amount of fresh, nutritious food that is thrown away in the UK because it’s not ‘pretty’ enough for our supermarket shelves – and the businesses who produce it who are struggling or, worse, shutting down. Continue reading “War on Waste”
